FREEMASONRY -- Factual History and Conspiracy Theories
Cross-contribution: Herodote (historical contextualization) + Michel (conspiracy catalogue)
1. ORIGINS AND DEVELOPMENT
1.1 From operative guilds to speculative lodges [ESTABLISHED]
Modern Freemasonry traces its roots to the stonemason guilds of the Middle Ages. These guilds protected their knowledge (cutting techniques, geometry, architecture) through passwords, signs of recognition, and initiation rituals. 'Lodges' were the temporary buildings on cathedral construction sites.
Foundational documents:
- Regius Manuscript (ca. 1390, British Library, MS Royal 17.A.I): oldest Masonic document, 794 verses in Middle English
- Cooke Manuscript (ca. 1410-1450): includes a legendary history going back to Lamech and Euclid
- Schaw Statutes (1598-1599): William Schaw, Master of Works to James VI of Scotland. First documents organizing lodges on a permanent territorial basis. Key figure in the operative/speculative transition
First documented non-operative initiate: Elias Ashmole (1617-1692), antiquarian and founder of the Ashmolean Museum at Oxford, initiated in Warrington on October 16, 1646.
Ref.: David Stevenson, The Origins of Freemasonry: Scotland's Century 1590-1710 (1988); Andrew Prescott, in Handbook of Freemasonry (Brill, 2014).
1.2 The Grand Lodge of London (1717) [ESTABLISHED]
June 24, 1717 (St. John the Baptist's Day): four London lodges meet at the 'Goose and Gridiron' tavern near St. Paul's. Anthony Sayer elected first Grand Master. Then George Payne (1718), then Jean-Theophile Desaguliers (1719, French Huguenot, Fellow of the Royal Society, friend of Newton).
Anderson's Constitutions (1723, James Anderson, Presbyterian minister):
- Mandatory belief in the 'Grand Architect of the Universe' (deist concept)
- Prohibition of religious and political discussions in lodge
- Equality of members regardless of rank
- Obligation of morality and charity
Expansion: Ireland 1725, France 1725-1728 (lodge at the Louis d'Argent, Jacobites), America 1733 (Boston), Scotland 1736. In 1751: rival Grand Lodge of the 'Ancients'. Merger in 1813 = United Grand Lodge of England (UGLE).
1.3 Freemasonry in France [ESTABLISHED]
First lodges by Jacobite exiles and British diplomats (1725-28). Duke of Antin first French GM (1738). GODF founded 1773.
1877: major turning point -- The GODF (under the grand mastership of Pastor Frederic Desmons) removes the requirement of belief in the GAOTU. Break with UGLE: 'regular' FM (mandatory belief, UGLE-recognized) vs 'liberal/adogmatic' (no imposed belief, GODF leading).
Third Republic: Emile Combes (PM 1902-05, FM) = separation law of 1905. Jules Ferry (FM) = secular school system.
Vichy: Bans FM (law of August 13, 1940). Bernard Fay directs the Service des societes secretes, 6,000 civil servants dismissed, anti-Masonic exhibition at the Petit Palais, film Forces Occultes (1943). 549 Freemasons deported.
1.4 Freemasonry in America [ESTABLISHED]
14 confirmed Freemason American presidents (from Washington to Gerald Ford, 1949): Washington, Monroe, Jackson, Polk, Buchanan, Andrew Johnson, Garfield, McKinley, Theodore Roosevelt, Taft, Harding, Franklin Roosevelt, Truman, Ford.
NOTE: Jefferson, John Adams, and Thomas Paine are NOT documented Freemasons.
Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790): GM Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania (1734), member of Les Neuf Soeurs lodge in Paris (1778). George Washington: initiated November 4, 1752, at Fredericksburg. Laying of the Capitol cornerstone (September 18, 1793) in Masonic ceremony.
Ref.: Steven C. Bullock, Revolutionary Brotherhood (1996).
1.5 Rites and degrees [ESTABLISHED]
3 fundamental degrees (Blue Lodge): Entered Apprentice, Fellowcraft, Master Mason. Legend of Hiram Abiff -- architect of the Temple of Solomon murdered by three companions (no direct biblical basis).
AASR: 33 degrees. The 33rd = administrative/honorary degree conferred by co-optation. York Rite: 13 degrees, Commandery of Knights Templar (only branch requiring Trinitarian Christian faith). Memphis-Misraim: 90-95 degrees, marginal, unrecognized.
Theory of 'hidden degrees' beyond the 33rd: [DELUSIONAL]. No evidence. No worldwide 'central government' of FM.
2. FREEMASONRY AND THE ENLIGHTENMENT
2.1 Actual role [ESTABLISHED]
Lodges = spaces of sociability where nobles, bourgeois, clergy, and intellectuals mingled in an unprecedented ritual equality. Margaret C. Jacob (Living the Enlightenment, 1991): lodges were 'schools of constitutional government' -- voting, regulated debate, equality. But most lodges were loyalist. Daniel Roche (Le Siecle des Lumieres en province, 1978): places of conformism as much as innovation.
2.2 Verified famous members [ESTABLISHED]
Franklin (GM Pennsylvania 1734), Voltaire (initiated April 7, 1778, at Les Neuf Soeurs, sponsored by Franklin), Washington (initiated Nov 4, 1752), Mozart (initiated Dec 14, 1784, in Vienna, The Magic Flute), Lafayette, Goethe (initiated June 23, 1780, in Weimar), Frederick II of Prussia (initiated 1738).
2.3 Freemasonry and the French Revolution [ESTABLISHED for facts; HYPOTHESIS for causal link]
Founding accusation: Abbe Augustin Barruel, Memoires pour servir a l'histoire du Jacobinisme (1797-98) -- triple conspiracy of philosophers + FM + Illuminati. Simultaneously, John Robison (Scotland), Proofs of a Conspiracy (1797). These two works found the modern theory of the 'Masonic conspiracy'.
Reality: Many revolutionaries were FM (Mirabeau, Lafayette, Philippe-Egalite -- GM of the GODF, Desmoulins, Danton possibly). BUT also counter-revolutionaries (Joseph de Maistre). The Revolution has massive socio-economic causes (1788-89 famine, inequalities, fiscal crisis). The Revolution CLOSED the lodges (GODF ceases 1793). Philippe-Egalite renounces FM and is guillotined (Nov 6, 1793). Robespierre suspects FM of moderation.
Ran Halevi (Les Loges maconniques dans la France d'Ancien Regime, 1984): lodges were predominantly conservative and monarchist.
Ref.: Roger Chartier, Les Origines culturelles de la Revolution francaise (1990).
3. BAVARIAN ILLUMINATI
3.1 Facts [ESTABLISHED]
Adam Weishaupt (1748-1830), professor at Ingolstadt, founds the Order on May 1, 1776. Objective: combat superstition, obscurantism, Jesuit influence. Initiated into FM in 1777. Baron Adolph von Knigge (1752-1796) joins in 1780, restructures the Order by grafting it onto Masonic degrees. Classical pseudonyms (Weishaupt = 'Spartacus', Knigge = 'Philon'). Goethe briefly a member ('Abaris').
Apex (1784): 2,000-3,000 members. Dissolution 1784-1785 by Duke Charles Theodore of Bavaria. Archives seized from Xavier von Zwack, published (Einige Originalschriften, 1787). Weishaupt exiled to Gotha, dies in 1830.
3.2 How 9 years became a permanent conspiracy [ESTABLISHED for facts; PROBABLE for the analysis]
Paradox: 9 years, max 3,000 members, zero political objectives achieved -> permanent reference point of worldwide conspiracism.
Factors: (1) publication of internal documents = authentic 'corpus'; (2) timing (1776 = US independence, pre-French Revolution); (3) actual infiltration of lodges = 'proof of concept'; (4) perfect narrative structure (founder, secret plan, pseudonyms, apparent destruction); (5) recursivity: each generation reinterprets (Barruel 1797, Carr 1958, Robertson 1991, QAnon 2017+).
Ref.: Terry Melanson, Perfectibilists (2009); Rene Le Forestier, Les Illumines de Baviere (1914/2001).
4. ACTUAL CASES OF DEVIATION
4.1 Lodge P2 (Propaganda Due) -- Italy [ESTABLISHED -- fact, not theory]
The most spectacular case of a lodge used as an instrument of political conspiracy.
Licio Gelli (1919-2015): volunteer for Franco (Spain 1937), Nazi liaison, CIA contact post-1948, SISMI agent. Takes control of Lodge P2 within the Grand Orient of Italy.
March 17, 1981: search of Gelli's villa in Castiglion Fibocchi. List of 962 members:
- 30 Italian army generals
- 4 intelligence service chiefs
- Ministers and parliamentarians
- Silvio Berlusconi (card no. 1816, January 26, 1978)
- Roberto Calvi (president of Banco Ambrosiano, found hanged under Blackfriars Bridge, London, June 18, 1982, pockets filled with bricks. Reclassified as homicide 2002)
- Michele Sindona (banker, poisoned with cyanide in prison, 1986)
- Press/RAI directors, Constitutional Court and Cassation judges
'Piano di Rinascita Democratica': program for seizing power (media, parties, Constitution, judiciary). Compared to the Berlusconi program of the 1990s.
CIA / Vatican / Gladio [PROBABLE]: Gelli documented CIA links. Operation Gladio revealed by PM Andreotti (Oct 24, 1990). Banco Ambrosiano = partner of IOR (Vatican Bank). Bankruptcy: $1.3 billion hole. Vatican pays $241M in 'voluntary contribution' (1984). Monsignor Marcinkus (IOR president) under arrest warrant, protected by Vatican immunity.
P2 Lesson: The Masonic instrument CAN be hijacked. But it is the exception, not the rule. The conspiracy was national (Italian), not worldwide. And it was discovered.
Dissolved by the Anselmi law of January 25, 1982. Ref.: Anselmi parliamentary commission (1984); Philip Willan, The Last Supper (2007); David Yallop, In God's Name (1984).
4.2 Affaire des fiches (France, 1904) [ESTABLISHED]
The GODF provided the Minister of War (General Louis Andre) with files on the religious and political opinions of officers. Lodges collected information (religious practice, opinion on the Dreyfus affair). Centralized at rue Cadet, transmitted to the ministerial cabinet.
Revelation by Captain Jean-Baptiste Bidegain (GODF secretary) to nationalist deputy Guyot de Villeneuve (October 28 and 31, 1904). General Andre slapped in session by deputy Gabriel Syveton (found dead under suspicious circumstances a month later). Andre resigns November 15, 1904. Combes government falls January 1905.
An ACTUAL case of political surveillance by a Masonic network. One of the rare cases where a 'Masonic conspiracy' is a historical fact.
4.3 Freemasonry and colonialism [PROBABLE]
In Francophone Africa: FM (GODF, GLNF) as a 'Francafrique' influence network. Confirmed FM presidents: Houphouet-Boigny (Ivory Coast), Omar Bongo (Gabon, GM of the Grand Lodge of Gabon). Instrumental use of fraternal networks in service of neo-colonial relations.
Ref.: Pascal Airault and Jean-Pierre Bat, Francafrique, operations secretes (2016).
5. ALBERT PIKE AND THE LUCIFERIAN MYTH
5.1 The person [ESTABLISHED]
Albert Pike (1809-1891): lawyer, Confederate general, Sovereign Grand Commander of the AASR-SJ (1859-1891). Morals and Dogma (1871): 850+ page philosophical treatise, personal essay, NOT a ritual text.
Most exploited passage: 'Lucifer, the Light-bearer! Strange and mysterious name...' = etymological commentary (Latin lux ferre = light-bearer) in a passage on gnostic dualism. NOT a promotion of Lucifer worship. Pike was a converted Christian. The AASR-SJ withdrew Morals and Dogma from distribution in 1974.
Ref.: S. Brent Morris, 'Albert Pike and Lucifer', Short Talk Bulletin (1993); Arturo de Hoyos, annotated ed. (2011).
5.2 The 'Pike-Mazzini letter' on three world wars [DEBUNKED]
Probable source: William Guy Carr, Pawns in the Game (1958). Pike allegedly predicted three world wars (tsarism, Zionism/nationalism, Zionism/Islam -> 'pure Luciferianism').
Debunking: no original exists. The British Museum denies possessing the document. 'Political Zionism' is anachronistic for 1871 (Herzl = 1896-97). First mention 1958 (Carr), 87 years later. Probably derives from the Taxil hoax. A fabrication of the 20th century.
6. THE LEO TAXIL HOAX (1885-1897) [ESTABLISHED]
Leo Taxil (Gabriel Antoine Jogand-Pages, 1854-1907): freethinker and former FM (expelled for fraud). In 1885, feigns a conversion to Catholicism. Publishes works 'revealing' the 'satanic secrets' of FM:
- Invents 'Palladism' (secret hierarchy led by Pike)
- Invents Diana Vaughan (converted high priestess)
- Series Le Diable au XIXe Siecle (1892-95, pseudonym 'Dr Bataille')
The Church accepts with enthusiasm. Pope Leo XIII receives Taxil in private audience.
April 19, 1897: Press conference at the Societe de Geographie, Paris. Taxil reveals that EVERYTHING was a 12-year hoax. 'Palladism is my work, from A to Z. Diana Vaughan is me.'
Lasting impact: Despite the PUBLIC confession, many elements continue to circulate as 'facts' 128 years later. The 'Pike quote about Lucifer' invoked by conspiracists probably comes from the Taxil corpus, not from Morals and Dogma.
Ref.: Eugen Weber, 'The Secret World of Jean Barois' (1965); Massimo Introvigne, Enquete sur le satanisme (1997).
7. ANTI-MASONRY
7.1 Papal condemnations [ESTABLISHED]
Chronology:
- 1738: In Eminenti (Clement XII) -- first condemnation, penalty of excommunication
- 1751: Providas Romanorum (Benedict XIV)
- 1884: Humanum Genus (Leo XIII) -- the most virulent ('kingdom of Satan')
- 1917: Code of Canon Law, canon 2335 -- automatic excommunication
- 1983: Declaration of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (signed Ratzinger): 'negative judgment unchanged, grave sin, exclusion from communion'
Three fundamental objections: philosophical naturalism, secrecy, religious relativism.
Ref.: Jose A. Ferrer Benimeli, La Masoneria (2001); Alec Mellor, Nos Freres separes (1961).
7.2 Protocols of the Elders of Zion [ESTABLISHED as a forgery]
Forgery fabricated by the Okhrana (Tsarist secret police), probably by Pyotr Rachkovsky (head of foreign section, Paris), between 1897 and 1903. Plagiarism of Maurice Joly's Dialogue aux Enfers entre Machiavel et Montesquieu (1864, anti-Napoleon III pamphlet, does not mention Jews) and Hermann Goedsche's novel Biarritz (1868, fictional scene of a rabbinical meeting).
First publication: Russian journal Znamya (1903). Nilus edition (1905) = widest dissemination.
Debunking: Philip Graves of the Times (1921) demonstrates the plagiarism. Berne trial (1934-35) declares the text 'a forgery and a nonsense'.
Catastrophic impact: tsarist pogroms (1903-06), Henry Ford (500,000 copies, Dearborn Independent 1920-27), Nazi propaganda (cited in Mein Kampf), Hamas Charter (1988, art. 32). Cements the amalgamation FM = Judaism = world conspiracy.
Ref.: Norman Cohn, Warrant for Genocide (1967) -- definitive reference.
7.3 Nazi anti-Masonry [ESTABLISHED]
Dissolution of all lodges (1935). Archive seizure by SD/RSHA (partly recovered in Moscow after 1991). Anti-Masonic exhibitions (Berlin 1937, Nuremberg). 80,000 to 200,000 European Freemasons persecuted (USHMM). Deportation (inverted red triangle).
France: Vichy law August 13, 1940. Bernard Fay (College de France): 60,000 files, 6,000 civil servants dismissed, 549 deported. Film Forces Occultes (1943, Jean Mamy -- shot 1949). Fay sentenced to life (1946), escapes to Switzerland (1951), pardoned by Coty (1959).
Ref.: Dominique Rossignol, Vichy et les francs-macons (1981).
8. B'NAI B'RITH
8.1 Foundation [ESTABLISHED]
B'nai B'rith ('Sons of the Covenant'): founded October 13, 1843, Sinsheimer cafe, Lower East Side, New York, by Henry Jones and 11 German Jewish immigrants. Oldest Jewish service organization still in operation.
Context: American Jews effectively excluded from fraternal orders (FM, Odd Fellows) by social antisemitism. Structure borrowed from FM (grades, rituals, lodges) -- like dozens of 19th-century American fraternal orders (Knights of Pythias, Knights of Columbus). B'nai B'rith is NOT a Masonic obedience.
Activities: immigrant support, hospitals, orphanages, combating antisemitism. BBYO (1924), Hillel (1923). 500,000 members at peak (1960s), 100-200,000 in the 2000s.
8.2 ADL (Anti-Defamation League, 1913) [ESTABLISHED]
Founded by Sigmund Livingston, a commission of B'nai B'rith. Trigger: Leo Frank affair (Atlanta, 1913 -- Jewish entrepreneur convicted of murder in a trial marked by antisemitism, lynched August 17, 1915, in Marietta). Independent of B'nai B'rith since 1987.
1993 controversy: San Francisco files affair -- investigator Roy Bullock collected files on 10,000+ individuals and 600 organizations, with a corrupt police officer (Tom Gerard, ex-CIA). Settlement 1999 ($175,000).
8.3 Theory of 'Jewish Freemasonry' [DELUSIONAL]
Proponents: Nesta Webster, Secret Societies and Subversive Movements (1924); far-right websites; certain Islamist circles.
Conspiracist reasoning: proven formal borrowing (grades, rituals) + Protocols FM-Judaism amalgamation + presence in the international sphere = 'secret Jewish Freemasonry controlling ordinary FM'.
Reality: B'nai B'rith is a public community service organization. Labeling them 'secret Jewish FM' is antisemitic conflation.
Ref.: Deborah E. Lipstadt, Antisemitism: Here and Now (2019).
9. FREEMASONRY AND ZIONISM [SPECULATIVE to DELUSIONAL]
Theory: FM (Hiram myth, Temple of Solomon) would be intrinsically linked to Zionism and the reconstruction of the 3rd Temple.
Assessment: The Temple is indeed central to Masonic symbolism, but it is SYMBOLIC and ALLEGORICAL, not a political program. FM has no institutional position on Israel. Herzl and Weizmann were NOT documented Freemasons. The theory is fed by the Protocols.
10. FREEMASONRY AND THE FINANCIAL SYSTEM [SPECULATIVE]
Proponents: William Guy Carr, Pawns in the Game (1958); G. Edward Griffin, The Creature from Jekyll Island (1994); Eustace Mullins, Secrets of the Federal Reserve (1952, antisemitic).
Assessment: The Federal Reserve was created by a public legislative process (1913). Paul Warburg was NOT a documented Freemason. P2 shows that Freemasons CAN be involved in financial corruption, but on a national scale, not worldwide.
11. EPSTEIN INTERSECTION: ZERO CONNECTION [NO DOCUMENTED LINK]
There is NO evidence that Jeffrey Epstein was a Freemason. The words 'mason', 'masonic', 'freemasonry', 'lodge' do NOT appear in connection with Epstein in the corpus of 638,000+ files.
Indirect links identified:
- STRUCTURAL parallels: blackmail system comparable to loyalty-through-secrets mechanisms (Skull and Bones, P2). But structural parallel does not equal causal or institutional link
- Overlap of social circles: Prince Andrew (monarchy linked to UGLE, Duke of Kent = GM since 1967), but the Andrew-Epstein link = social/criminal, not Masonic. Kissinger (Epstein contact): FM membership claimed but unconfirmed
Conclusion: Correlation of social milieu (the elite frequents the same clubs, dinners, lodges, forums), NOT a causal link. The small size of the elite produces these overlaps without requiring a Masonic conspiracy.
