From the Eugenics Record Office to Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (1910-present)

Summary

The Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) housed the Eugenics Record Office (ERO, 1910-1939) on its campus. The ERO, founded by Charles Davenport and directed by Harry Laughlin, was the scientific center of American eugenics (forced sterilizations, Immigration Act 1924). After the closure of the ERO (1939), the campus was radically reoriented toward molecular biology (Watson & Crick, 1953). James Watson, Director of CSHL (1968-2007), is a documented contact of Epstein (504 corpus files, Oct 2011-Jun 2019), stripped of his titles in January 2019 for racist remarks.
