MKUltra — Derivative Programs and Alleged Continuation
MKUltra — Les programmes dérivés et la continuation
Summary
Detailed description
PART 1: DOCUMENTED PROGRAMS (PRECURSORS AND CONTINUATIONS OF MKULTRA)
This entry complements THEORY-0006 (MKUltra) by focusing on associated programs and continuation theories.
Project Bluebird (1950-1951, DOCUMENTED): Project Bluebird was the CIA’s first official program aimed at developing mental control and specialized interrogation techniques. Approved on April 20, 1950, by CIA Director Roscoe Hillenkoetter, Bluebird's objectives were: (1) to discover methods to condition personnel to resist interrogations, (2) to develop interrogation techniques leveraging drugs and hypnosis, (3) to explore the possibility of controlling an individual remotely. The program was directed by Colonel Sheffield Edwards. Experiments involved the use of sodium pentothal, hypnosis, and deprogramming techniques on human subjects, often prisoners of war and refugees from Soviet bloc countries interrogated in 'safe houses' in Europe and Asia.
Project Artichoke (1951-1953, DOCUMENTED): Successor to Bluebird, Project Artichoke was renamed on August 20, 1951, and significantly expanded. Directed by the CIA with the participation of the FBI, military intelligence (Army, Navy, Air Force), its explicit objectives included: 'Can we control an individual to the point where he will execute our orders against his will and even against the fundamental laws of nature, such as self-preservation?' (declassified CIA memo, January 1952). Artichoke experimented with LSD, morphine, heroin, marijuana, hypnosis, sensory deprivation, and psychological torture techniques. A 1954 declassified document describes an experiment where two women were placed under deep hypnosis and conditioned to execute orders without memory—a prototype of the 'Manchurian candidate' concept. Artichoke was absorbed by MKUltra in 1953.
MKSEARCH (1964-1972, DOCUMENTED): MKSEARCH was a successor program to MKUltra, launched in 1964, aimed at continuing research on incapacitating agents and behavioral manipulation techniques. Less known than MKUltra, MKSEARCH included at least seven sub-projects. It was officially terminated in 1972, a year before the official end of MKUltra.
MKNAOMI (1953-1970, DOCUMENTED): MKNAOMI was the companion program to MKUltra, oriented towards the development of incapacitating or lethal biological and chemical weapons for the CIA. It included the development of toxins, dispersal systems, and biological agents for clandestine operations. The project produced shellfish toxin and saxitoxin-type poisons, poisoned dart guns, and other assassination devices. In 1975, the Church Committee revealed that the CIA had retained stocks of these toxins in direct violation of a 1969 executive order from President Nixon.
PART 2: PROJECT MONARCH (UNDOCUMENTED, ALLEGED)
'Project Monarch' is presented by its proponents as a mental control program derived from MKUltra, based on dissociative traumatic programming. Unlike MKUltra, Bluebird, and Artichoke, no declassified official document mentions a program named 'Monarch'. The theory primarily stems from:
Sources and origins of the theory:
- Mark Phillips and Cathy O'Brien: Their book 'Trance Formation of America' (1995) constitutes the foundational text of the Monarch theory. O'Brien claims to be a 'survivor' of Monarch programming, alleging she was the victim of ritual abuse and mind programming by government elites since childhood. Phillips claims to be a former intelligence agent. The claims are extraordinarily detailed but lack independent corroboration.
- Fritz Springmeier and Cisco Wheeler: 'The Illuminati Formula Used to Create an Undetectable Total Mind Controlled Slave' (1996). Springmeier was convicted of armed robbery in 2003.
- Brice Taylor (pseudonym): 'Thanks for the Memories' (1999), similar allegations to those of O’Brien.
Alleged principles of Monarch programming: The theory posits that extreme traumas inflicted in early childhood (sexual abuse, torture, exposure to rituals) cause psychological dissociation, creating 'alters' (alternative personalities) that can be programmed for specific tasks: espionage, assassination, sexual exploitation, or messages. 'Programmers' would supposedly use keywords, images, and symbols to activate these alters. The theory draws on the clinical concept of dissociative identity disorder (DID/DID) but extrapolates it into directions not supported by mainstream psychiatric research.
Context: the ‘Satanic Panic’ of the 1980s-1990s: The Monarch theory developed within the context of the "Satanic Panic" (satanic panic) of the 1980s-1990s in the United States, a wave of social fear alleging widespread ritualistic satanic abuse in daycare centers and communities. This panic produced false accusations, wrongful convictions (the McMartin, Fells Acres cases, etc.), and the ‘recovered memories’ theory—a therapeutic practice widely discredited. The scientific community considers that 'survivor testimonies' of Monarch programming fall within this framework of suggested/constructed memories.
PART 3: ‘MANCHURIAN CANDIDATES’ – PROGRAMMED ASSASSINS (SPECULATIVE)
Sirhan Sirhan (THEORY, UNPROVEN): Sirhan Sirhan assassinated Senator Robert F. Kennedy on June 5, 1968, at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles. Sirhan has consistently claimed to have no memory of the murder, stating he was in a state of 'trance'. His attorney, William Pepper, argued that Sirhan had been 'programmed' using MKUltra-type techniques, asserting that Sirhan’s obsessive notes ('RFK must die') were the result of hypnotic conditioning. Dr. Daniel Brown, a Harvard psychiatrist, testified that Sirhan presented symptoms compatible with hypnotic programming. Ballistic questions (number of bullets, direction of shots) have fueled the theory of a second shooter. In 2022, California Governor Newsom denied Sirhan’s parole. The programming theory remains speculative and contested by most forensic experts.
Mark David Chapman (THEORY, UNPROVEN): Mark David Chapman assassinated John Lennon on December 8, 1980, in front of the Dakota Building in New York. Conspiracy theories allege that Chapman was a 'Manchurian candidate' programmed by the CIA to eliminate Lennon, perceived as a figure of cultural opposition. Elements cited include: Chapman’s strange behavior before and after the murder (remaining at the scene while reading 'The Catcher in the Rye'), his stay at the YMCA in Honolulu (alleged programming site), and his unexplained trips to countries where the CIA was active (Lebanon, Japan, Thailand). Author Fenton Bresler developed this theory in 'Who Killed John Lennon?' (1989). However, Chapman’s psychiatric evaluations diagnosed a personality disorder and interned him until 2016, and subsequently released him definitively in 2022.
John Hinckley Jr. (THEORY, UNPROVEN): John Hinckley Jr. attempted to assassinate President Ronald Reagan on March 30, 1981. Hinckley claimed to have acted to impress actress Jodie Foster. Conspiracy theories note that the Hinckley family had business connections with the Bush family (Neil Bush had a dinner planned with Hinckley's brother the night of the assassination attempt). If Reagan had died, George H.W. Bush (former CIA Director) would have become president. Hinckley was found not guilty by reason of insanity and interned until 2016, then released unconditionally in 2022.
PART 4: PROGRAMMING VIA THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY (SPECULATIVE)
An extension of the Monarch theory claims that the entertainment industry (music, film, television) is used as a tool for mass mind control, and that some celebrities are themselves programmed 'Monarch slaves'. Erratic behavior from celebrities (Britney Spears, her 2007 crisis; Kanye West; Amanda Bynes; etc.) is interpreted as 'programming malfunctions'. Symbolism in music videos and performances (the all-seeing eye, monarch butterflies, checkerboard patterns) is presented as 'programming triggers'. These theories are primarily developed on sites like Vigilant Citizen and in online communities. They lack empirical evidence and rely on subjective symbolic interpretations and magical thinking.
SYNTHESIS: It is essential to maintain a clear distinction between: (1) documented programs (Bluebird, Artichoke, MKUltra, MKSEARCH, MKNAOMI), which constitute proven historical facts and serious human rights violations; (2) partially plausible but unproven theories (some aspects of the RFK assassination might warrant reassessment); and (3) undocumented and largely discredited theories (Project Monarch, programming by the entertainment industry) that mix historical facts, pseudoscience, and conspiracy thinking. The proven existence of MKUltra is often used as 'proof' that everything else is true, a logically fallacious (slippery slope) argument.
