LICRA as an Instrument of the Pro-Israeli Lobby
La LICRA comme instrument du lobby pro-israelien
Summary
Detailed description
The LICRA (Ligue Internationale Contre le Racisme et l'Antisemitisme – International League Against Racism and Antisemitism) is one of France’s oldest anti-racism organizations (founded in 1927). The theory of its instrumentalization rests on several elements:
CONTROVERSIAL LEGAL ACTIONS: Following October 7, 2023, the LICRA reported to Prosecutor Mathilde Panot and Rima Hassan for ‘apology of terrorism’ (dismissed without action). Mario Stasi called for restricting access to universities for Judith Butler, Mélenchon, Thomas Portes and Rima Hassan.
LICRA-LEGISLATION BRIDGE: Caroline Yadan, former head of the LICRA’s antisemitism department, who subsequently became a Member of Parliament, submitted a bill effectively equating anti-Zionism with antisemitism. The law was adopted by the Law Commission in January 2026.
BONIFACE’S CRITICISM: Pascal Boniface (IRIS) criticizes the LICRA for having published a book in 2014 ‘prioritizing the defense of Israel over the fight against racism’.
LDH DOCUMENT: The LDH (Ligue des droits de l'homme – League for Human Rights) has produced a document detailing the ‘LICRA’s attacks against the solidarity movement with Palestine’.
PUBLIC FUNDING: The LICRA receives 400,000 EUR/year from the French government, which raises the question of the use of public funds for actions perceived as serving foreign interests.
COUNTER-ARGUMENTS:
- Mario Stasi is not Jewish, which complicates the community narrative
- The Bensoussan affair (2015-2018) shows that the LICRA can pursue a pro-Israel Jewish intellectual
- The LICRA legitimately acts against real antisemitism (Dieudonné, frescoes, etc.)
- No direct Israeli funding of the LICRA has been documented
