Summary

Sayanim (Hebrew: ‘assistants’) are, according to former Mossad agent Victor Ostrovsky, Jewish diaspora members who voluntarily provide logistical assistance to the Mossad (apartments, vehicles, professional cover stories, access to networks) without being full-fledged agents. The theory is instrumentalized by antisemites to insinuate that every Jew is a potential agent of Israel.

Detailed description

PRIMARY SOURCE: Victor Ostrovsky, former katsa (case officer) of the Mossad, describes the sayanim system in 'By Way of Deception' (1990) and 'The Other Side of Deception' (1994). Israel attempted to have the first book banned in American and Canadian courts – and failed, which tends to confirm the sensitivity of the content.

ACCORDING TO OSTROVSKY:

  • Sayanim are volunteers, non-remunerated (except for reimbursement of expenses)
  • They provide logistical assistance: lodging, vehicles, professional cover stories, access to social or professional networks
  • The Mossad allegedly maintains a file of thousands of sayanim in Western countries
  • They are unaware of the details of the operations they facilitate

ANALYSIS:

  1. COMPARABLE TO OTHER AGENCIES: The CIA uses 'assets' civilians. MI6 has 'helpers'. The German BND likewise. The concept is not unique to Israel.

  2. MODERATE (plausible) VERSION: Certain individuals within the Jewish diaspora occasionally assist the Mossad. This is consistent with the known functioning of intelligence services.

  3. EXTREME (antisemitic) VERSION: 'All Jews are sayanim' or 'every Jew is a potential agent'. This generalization is false and antisemitic. The vast majority of Jews in the diaspora have no connection to the Mossad.

  4. INSTRUMENTALIZATION: The concept is massively exploited by antisemites to justify distrust of Jews. It is one of the most dangerous conspiracy tropes because it transforms a commonplace intelligence practice into a collective accusation.
