Summary

The theory of adrenochrome harvesting alleges that a cabal of global elites (politicians, Hollywood stars, billionaires) kidnaps and terrorizes children to extract adrenochrome from their blood, a substance they would consume as an elixir of youth and a super-powerful psychedelic drug. This theory is chemically absurd (adrenochrome is a common laboratory reagent, industrially synthesizable), biologically false (no anti-aging properties demonstrated), and historically derived from a literary fiction (Hunter S. Thompson) and medieval antisemitic tropes (blood libel). It constitutes the central pillar of the QAnon narrative.

Detailed description

THE REAL CHEMISTRY OF ADRENOCRONE

Adrenochrome (2,3-dihydro-3-hydroxy-1-methyl-1H-indole-5,6-dione, C9H9NO3) is a real chemical compound produced by the oxidation of adrenaline (epinephrine). Properties:

  • Molecular weight: 179.17 g/mol
  • Appearance: reddish-brown crystalline powder
  • Synthesis: simple oxidation of epinephrine by silver nitrate, manganese dioxide, or other oxidants
  • Price: approximately 30 USD per gram at Sigma-Aldrich (reference A5752)
  • Use: research reagent in biochemistry, no approved medical use
  • Stability: degrades rapidly into adrenolutin, which makes storage difficult

Adrenochrome is NOT:

  • A potent hallucinogen (the few studies from the 1950s using very high doses produced non-reproducible results)
  • A fountain of youth (no studies show anti-aging effects)
  • A rare substance requiring human extraction (trivial industrial synthesis)

THE ADRENOCRONE HYPOTHESIS OF SCHIZOPHRENIA (1952)

In 1952, psychiatrists Abram Hoffer and Humphry Osmond proposed the hypothesis that schizophrenia could be caused by an endogenous overproduction of adrenochrome, which would act as a natural hallucinogen. This hypothesis, published as part of 'orthomolecular medicine,' was tested in the 1950s-1960s but was not confirmed by controlled studies. It is now considered outdated. However, it planted the seed of the idea that adrenochrome possesses powerful psychoactive properties.

HUNTER S. THOMPSON AND THE FOUNDATIONAL FICTION (1971)

In 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas' (1971), Hunter S. Thompson writes a scene where his alter ego Raoul Duke is offered adrenochrome by his lawyer, who claims to have obtained it 'from the adrenal gland of a living human being.' Thompson describes spectacular hallucinogenic effects. This scene is LITERARY FICTION, as Thompson has confirmed. The film by Terry Gilliam (1998) with Johnny Depp reinforced the mythology of adrenochrome as a rare and powerful drug in popular culture.

THE MODERN CONSPIRACY THEORY (2017-PRESENT)

The contemporary version of the theory emerges on QAnon forums and combines:

  1. THOMPSON’S FICTION: Adrenochrome is presented as a super-powerful drug.

  2. MEDIEVAL BLOOD LIBEL: The allegation that elites kill children for their blood directly retrieves the antisemitic trope of the blood libel (see THEORY-1028). QAnon adds a pseudo-scientific veneer by replacing 'the blood of Christian children' with 'the adrenochrome of terrorized children'.

  3. PSEUDOSCIENCE OF TERROR: The theory claims that ‘best quality’ adrenochrome is produced when the victim is TERRORIZED before extraction, because fear stimulates adrenaline production. This reasoning is biologically simplistic: fear does stimulate the release of adrenaline, but adrenochrome is a product of oxidation, which forms chemically, not biologically under the conditions described.

  4. THE ANTI-AGING THESIS: Elites are said to consume adrenochrome to remain young. The ‘evidence’ presented includes the physical appearances of Hilary Clinton, George Soros, or other figures detested by QAnon. There is no scientific basis for an anti-aging effect of adrenochrome.

ACCUSATION TARGETS AND FIGURES

The theory regularly accuses:

  • Hillary Clinton and Bill Clinton
  • Barack Obama
  • George Soros
  • Tom Hanks and other Hollywood stars
  • The Rothschilds
  • John Podesta and Tony Podesta
  • Jeffrey Epstein (via the Little St. James temple)
  • Marina Abramovic (via the 'Spirit Cooking' performance)
  • Bill Gates
  • Anthony Fauci

No evidence exists against any of these people for these allegations.

INSTRUMENTALIZATION OF THE EPSTEIN AFFAIR

The Epstein affair is instrumentalized as follows:

  1. Epstein’s actual abuses of minors are reinterpreted as 'adrenochrome extraction rituals'
  2. The Little St. James temple is presented as an 'adrenochrome laboratory'
  3. The Lolita Express flights are interpreted as 'goods transfers' (children)
  4. Epstein's death in prison is interpreted as an assassination to protect the 'adrenochrome network' None of these elements is supported by documentary evidence in the DOJ corpus.

PARAMEDICAL: PARABIOTIC EXPERIENCES

A distant kernel of truth exists in research on parabiosis (transfusion of young blood to aged organisms). Experiences by Tony Wyss-Coray (Stanford, 2014) on mice showed that the plasma blood of young mice could have regenerative effects on aged mice. Ambrosia LLC (2016-2019) offered transfusions of 'young blood' to wealthy clients (8,000 USD per transfusion). The FDA issued a warning against this practice in 2019. These REAL experiences have NO connection to adrenochrome and do not require terrorizing or killing donors. However, proponents of the adrenochrome theory cite parabiosis as 'proof' that elites 'know' that young blood is beneficial.

AN ANTI-SEMITIC ASPECT

The adrenochrome theory is structurally identical to the medieval blood libel (see THEORY-1028): elites (often identified as Jewish — Soros, Rothschild, Epstein) kidnap and kill children (Christian/innocent) to consume their blood (adrenochrome). Several researchers (Mike Rothschild, 'The Storm Is Upon Us', 2021; Adrienne LaFrance, The Atlantic, 2020) have documented the underlying antisemitic nature of the theory. Promoters of the theory reject this interpretation.
