Summary

The blood libel (blood accusation, accusation of ritual murder) is one of the oldest and most destructive conspiracy theories in history. It alleges that Jews kidnap and kill Christian children to use their blood in religious rituals (matzah production for Passover, etc.). This libel, born in the 12th century, has triggered pogroms, expulsions, and massacres for 900 years. It has been systematically refuted by papal authority, civil courts, and historical research. It resurfaces in contemporary conspiracy theories (QAnon, adrenochrome, Pizzagate) in secularized forms but with structurally identical characteristics: powerful elites (often identified as Jewish) kill innocent children to consume their vital substance.

Detailed description

GENEALOGY OF THE BLOOD LIBEL

  1. NORWICH, 1144 — THE FOUNDING CASE The monk Thomas of Monmouth wrote 'The Life and Passion of William of Norwich' around 1150, alleging that a 12-year-old boy, William, was kidnapped and crucified by Jews of Norwich during Passover 1144. This is the first documented accusation of Jewish ritual murder. Thomas’s account is a theological construction, not a factual testimony. He does NOT mention the use of blood, which will be added later.

  2. THE CLASSIC BLOOD LIBEL (12th–19th Centuries) The accusation evolved to include the allegation that Jews use the blood of Christian children to make matzah (unleavened bread) for Passover. Hundreds of cases are documented throughout Europe:

  • Hugh of Lincoln (1255): allegation of ritual crucifixion; 19 Jews are hanged.
  • Simon of Trent (1475): a 2-year-old child is found dead; the Jewish community is accused, tortured, and executed. Simon is beatified by the Church (canonization revoked in 1965).
  • Damascus Affair (1840): a Capuchin monk and his servant disappear in Damascus; the Jewish community is accused. 13 Jews are arrested and tortured. The affair provokes an international diplomatic crisis.
  • Hilsner Affair (1899): Leopold Hilsner, a Jewish vagrant from Bohemia, is accused of the ritual murder of a young girl in Polna. Condemned to death (commuted to life imprisonment), he is finally pardoned in 1918. Tomas Masaryk (future president of Czechoslovakia) defends Hilsner and denounces the blood libel.
  • Beilis Affair (1913): Menahem Mendel Beilis is accused of the ritual murder of a 13-year-old boy in Kiev. His trial, followed by the international press, concludes with an acquittal. The accusation is recognized as a fabrication by the Tsarist government.
  1. PAPAL CONDEMNATIONS Several popes have condemned the blood libel:
  • Innocent IV (bull 'Lacrimabilem Judaeorum', 1247): condemns the 'false accusations' and prohibits persecutions.
  • Gregory X (1272): repeats the prohibition.
  • Paul III (1540): condemns the accusations.
  • Clement XIV (1758): declares that the blood libel is a calumny. Ganganelli (future Clement XIV) produces a comprehensive report at the request of the Sacred Office, examining dozens of cases and concluding that the accusations are unfounded.
  • Nostra Aetate (1965, Vatican II): rejects the accusation of deicide and condemns antisemitism in all its forms.
  1. MODERN PERSISTENCE (19th–20th Centuries)
  • 'The Protocols of the Elders of Zion' (1903): a fabricated document produced by the Tsarist secret police (Okhrana), alleging a Jewish world conspiracy. Although not directly referencing the blood libel, it provides the conceptual framework of the 'Jewish conspiracy' that persists in contemporary theories.
  • Kielce Pogrom (1946): IN POLAND, AFTER THE SHOAH, a rumor of a blood libel provokes a pogrom that kills 42 Jewish Holocaust survivors. It is the last major European pogrom based on the blood libel.
  • Nazi Propaganda: The Der Sturmer newspaper of Julius Streicher regularly features the blood libel. The May 1934 special edition is entirely devoted to 'Jewish ritual murder'.
  • Arab World: The blood libel is reprised in anti-Israel propaganda (Syrian TV series 'Al-Shatat', 2003; speech by Mustafa Tlass, Syrian Minister of Defense, 'Matza of Zion', 1983).

CONTEMPORARY RESURGENCE: QANON AND POST-EPSTEIN

Since 2016-2017, the blood libel has resurfaced in Western conspiracy theories in secularized forms:

  1. ISOMORPHIC STRUCTURE: The narrative structure is IDENTICAL to the classic blood libel:

    • Blood libel: Jews (elites) kidnap children (Christians) to consume their blood (during Passover)
    • QAnon/Adrenochrome: Elites (often Jewish: Soros, Rothschild, Epstein) kidnap children (innocents) to consume their adrenochrome (to stay young) The ONLY changes are cosmetic: 'Jews' -> 'elites' (but the cited examples often remain Jewish), 'blood' -> 'adrenochrome', 'Passover' -> 'satanic rituals'.
  2. PIZZAGATE (2016): Allegations of basements where children are detained for 'rituals' directly recall medieval allegations of Jewish cellars where Christian children were sacrificed.

  3. ADRENOCRONE (2017+): The theory of adrenochrome harvesting (THEORY-1027) is the chemically masked version of the blood libel: children are killed so that a substance can be extracted from their blood.

  4. 'SPIRIT COOKING' (2016): The Marina Abramović affair (THEORY-1029) recycles the trope of a blood banquet/ritual cannibalism.

  5. EPSTEIN AFFAIR: The REAL abuses of Epstein (Jewish, billionaire, predator) are reinterpreted through the prism of the blood libel: it is no longer a matter of 'sexual abuse' but of 'satanic rituals', 'child sacrifices', 'adrenochrome extraction'. Little St. James Temple becomes the 'Temple of Moloch'. This narrative shift (from real crime to antisemitic trope) is documented by extremism researchers.

STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS: WHY THE BLOOD LIBEL PERSISTS

Sociologist and historian of Antisemitismusforschung Wolfgang Benz identifies several factors:

  1. SOCIAL FUNCTION: The blood libel designates a scapegoat for parental anxieties (child safety)
  2. MORAL INVERSION: It projects the most abhorrent impulses onto the Other (cannibalism, infanticide)
  3. SACRALIZATION OF THE VICTIM: The innocent child is the perfect victim, making the accusation emotionally irresistible
  4. TRANSFERABILITY: The structure adapts to any hated group (Jews, Satanists, elites, pedophiles)
  5. RESISTANCE TO REFUTATION: The lack of evidence is interpreted as proof of the conspiracy's power

HISTORICAL IMPACT The blood libel has directly caused:

  • Hundreds of pogroms throughout Europe (12th–20th centuries)
  • Thousands of deaths
  • Expulsions of entire communities
  • Unjust convictions and tortures
  • A contribution to the normalization of antisemitic violence that enabled the Shoah

Its contemporary resurgence in QAnon has not (yet) triggered mass violence comparable to that of the past, but has engendered isolated acts of violence (Comet Ping Pong, 2016; Christchurch attack, 2019 — whose manifesto cites QAnon tropes).
