Wealth equals legitimacy (financial theodicy of fortune)

Wealth legitimacy biasRich people can't be criminalsFinancial meritocracy myth

Summary

Belief that extreme wealth is an indicator of competence and legitimacy. An individual possessing hundreds of millions cannot be an ordinary criminal. In Weberian terms, this is the theodicy of happiness (Theodicy of Glückes) applied to finance: wealth as a sign of merit. Epstein’s fortune functioned as an epistemological shield which neutralized the stigma of his 2008 conviction.

Detailed description

The belief that wealth equals legitimacy is the central mechanism of the post-conviction normalization of Epstein (SOC-0007, SOC-0016). After 2008, despite a conviction for sexual assault of a minor, Epstein retained the bulk of his social network because his wealth (real or presumed) continued to signal competence and merit. This mechanism operates at three levels: (1) individual — 'someone that rich can't be truly guilty,' (2) institutional — banks (JPM, DB) maintain a profitable client despite reputational risk, (3) social — peers continue to frequent him because his wealth confers social capital by association. Weber describes this phenomenon as the Theodicy of Happiness: the privileged need to believe their fortune is deserved, and conversely, the fortune of others is a sign of merit. Applying this belief to a convicted sex offender reveals its ideological nature.

IDEOLOGIE.
